Parliamentary representation

Shri Panda won Kendrapara for the Biju Janata Dal in 2009 and 2014. He resigned the seat in 2018 and contested it as the BJP candidate in 2019, when Anubhav Mohanty of the BJD won. He won it back for the BJP in 2024.

The coast, the mangroves and the sea

Protected area

Bhitarkanika

Bhitarkanika National Park covers 145 sq km and was declared in 1998 under the Wild Life (Protection) Act. The area was designated a Ramsar wetland in 2002, according to the government’s answer to Starred Question 188.

Saltwater crocodiles & olive ridleys

The January 2025 census counted 1,826 saltwater crocodiles in Bhitarkanika. The nearby Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, declared in 1997, is a nesting coast for olive ridley turtles. No mass nesting was recorded there in 2026.

Coastal erosion

Satabhaya

In the Satabhaya area, six of seven villages have been lost to the sea. In 2018, 571 families were resettled at Bagapatia. Sea erosion was reported as an election issue in 2024.

    Conservation Efforts in Kendrapara, Odisha

    The answer gives central allocations for Bhitarkanika and mangrove conservation from 2020–21 to 2024–25, in rupees lakh: ₹512.13 lakh for wildlife habitat development, ₹487.87 lakh for mangrove conservation and management, and ₹1,643.63 lakh under the ECRICC project. It adds that ₹70.27 lakh was released under MISHTI.
